Persecution of Christians in Pakistan: 9 Heartbreaking Incidents and How God’s Church Stands Stronger Than Ever
A cry for justice, a testimony of faith, and an invitation for you to become part of God’s unstoppable mission in Pakistan.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:10
Pakistan is home to over 3 million Christians – a faithful minority living in a nation where following Jesus often comes at the highest cost. For decades, Pakistani Christians have endured violent mob attacks, forced conversions, false blasphemy charges, church bombings, and the burning of entire neighborhoods – simply for confessing the name of Christ.
Yet despite unspeakable suffering, the Church in Pakistan is not shrinking. It is growing. It is thriving. It is rising with the power of the Holy Spirit – and God is doing something remarkable.
In this article, we share 9 major incidents of persecution of Christians in Pakistan, the resilience of believers, and the incredible praise reports of how God is building His Church even in the midst of fire.
1. The Gojra Massacre (2009) – Christian Homes Set Ablaze
In August 2009, a violent mob attacked the Christian community in Gojra, Punjab, setting fire to over 100 Christian homes. At least 8 Christians were burned alive, including women and children. The attack was triggered by false blasphemy allegations. Entire families were displaced overnight, losing everything they had.
Despite this horrific tragedy, the Christian community in Gojra rebuilt their homes and their faith. Churches continued to hold services, and believers refused to abandon their Lord.
2. Joseph Colony Attack, Lahore (March 2013) – An Entire Neighborhood Destroyed
On March 9, 2013, a mob of over 3,000 people attacked Joseph Colony in Lahore – a predominantly Christian neighborhood. More than 150 Christian homes were looted and set on fire. Churches were vandalized, and hundreds of Bibles were burned. The attack was sparked by a single unverified blasphemy accusation against one Christian man.
Families who had lived there for generations lost everything in hours. Yet the believers of Joseph Colony stood firm. They returned, rebuilt, and continued worshipping the Lord who never abandoned them.

3. Peshawar Church Bombing (September 2013) – Deadliest Attack on Christians
On September 22, 2013, two suicide bombers attacked All Saints Church in Peshawar during Sunday worship. The explosion killed over 80 worshippers and injured more than 120 – making it the deadliest attack on Christians in Pakistan’s history. Men, women, and children who had gathered to praise God were killed in an instant.
The entire Christian community was shaken to its core. But even in their deepest grief, the survivors forgave. They returned to the same church, rebuilt it, and continued to worship – a powerful testimony to the world.
Good Samaritan Ministries traveled to Peshawar to stand with the grieving community, providing Bibles and financial assistance to the church pastor and the affected families.
4. Twin Church Bombings in Lahore (March 2015) – Targeted During Worship
On March 15, 2015, two churches in Lahore – Christ Church and St. John’s Catholic Church in the Youhanabad area – were bombed simultaneously during Sunday services. At least 15 people were killed and over 70 injured. The coordinated attack was designed to terrorize the Christian community during their most sacred time of worship.
Instead of retreating in fear, thousands of Christians came out in peaceful protest, demanding protection and justice. The churches were repaired, and worship never stopped.
Rev. Dr. Naeem Nasir and the Good Samaritan Ministries team personally visited the injured victims at the hospital, praying with them and providing financial support to the families during their most difficult time.

5. Lahore Easter Bombing (March 2016) – Children Targeted in a Park
On Easter Sunday 2016, a suicide bomber detonated explosives at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore, specifically targeting Christian families celebrating Easter. Over 75 people were killed – many of them women and children – and more than 340 were wounded. The bomber deliberately chose the children’s play area to inflict maximum casualties on Christian families.
This was one of the most devastating attacks in Pakistan’s history. Yet Pakistani Christians showed extraordinary courage, gathering the very next Sunday to worship and pray for their nation.
6. Quetta Church Attack (December 2017) – Bethel Memorial Church Bombed
On December 17, 2017, gunmen stormed Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta during a Sunday service attended by over 400 worshippers. At least 9 people were killed and over 50 injured. The attackers used grenades and automatic weapons against unarmed believers gathered in prayer.
The Quetta Christian community, one of the most vulnerable in Pakistan, responded not with hatred but with prayer. They continued their mission and refused to let fear silence their faith.
7. Asia Bibi Blasphemy Case (2010-2019) – A Christian Woman’s 9-Year Ordeal
Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of five, was sentenced to death in 2010 under Pakistan’s blasphemy law after a dispute with coworkers over drinking water. She spent nearly 9 years on death row for her faith. Her case drew international attention and exposed the severe misuse of blasphemy laws against Christians in Pakistan.
In October 2018, Pakistan’s Supreme Court acquitted her, but she had to flee the country for her safety. Her story became a global symbol of the persecution of Christians in Pakistan and the courage it takes to stand for Christ.
8. Jaranwala Attack (August 2023) – Churches and Bibles Burned by Thousands
On August 16, 2023, mobs numbering in the thousands attacked the Christian community in Jaranwala, Faisalabad. Over 25 churches were set on fire, hundreds of Christian homes were destroyed, and countless Bibles in Urdu were burned. The attack was triggered by false allegations against a Christian family.
Thousands of Christian families were left homeless. The images of burning churches and Bibles shocked the world. Yet within days, Pakistani Christians returned to the rubble of their churches and held open-air worship services – singing praise to God on the very ground where their houses of worship once stood.

9. Ongoing Persecution – Forced Conversions, Kidnappings, and Daily Discrimination
Beyond these major incidents, Pakistani Christians face daily persecution that rarely makes international headlines:
- Forced conversions of Christian girls who are kidnapped, forcibly married, and converted
- Bonded labor at brick kilns where entire Christian families work in slave-like conditions
- Discrimination in employment – Christians are often restricted to menial jobs like sanitation work
- Social exclusion in schools, neighborhoods, and workplaces
- False blasphemy charges used to settle personal disputes, leading to imprisonment or mob violence
- Thousands of Pakistani Christians who fled to Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand are still living as refugees, unable to return home
This daily reality makes life extremely difficult for millions of Christians in Pakistan. Yet their faith remains unshaken.
Their Hope is in the Risen Jesus – The Faith That Cannot Be Destroyed
“Because I live, you also will live.” – John 14:19
What gives Pakistani Christians the strength to endure such relentless persecution? The answer is simple and powerful – they believe in the Resurrected Messiah.
Despite the fires, the bombings, the false accusations, and the daily discrimination, Christians in Pakistan are standing strong on their faith. They are not a people without hope. Their hope is anchored in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ – the One who conquered death, defeated the grave, and promised eternal life to all who believe in Him.
Every Sunday across Pakistan, in small house churches and hidden prayer rooms, believers gather to worship the Living God. They sing songs of praise even when their churches have been burned. They open their Bibles even when their Scriptures have been torn. They pray for their persecutors even when their homes have been destroyed.
This is the power of the Resurrection at work. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is alive in every Pakistani believer. No amount of persecution can extinguish the fire of faith that burns in their hearts. They know that this world is not their final home, and that their Savior has prepared a place for them where there will be no more tears, no more pain, and no more persecution.
The body of Christ in Pakistan is not broken – it is rising. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb on the third day, the Church in Pakistan continues to rise from every attack, every trial, and every injustice. And nothing – absolutely nothing – can separate them from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).
PRAISE REPORT: What God Is Doing in the Midst of Persecution
“The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” – Tertullian
In the face of all this suffering, here is the most powerful truth: God’s Church in Pakistan is not dying – it is growing!
Through the ministry of Good Samaritan Ministries Pakistan, God is doing extraordinary things:
- New churches are being planted across Pakistan – in villages, towns, and cities – bringing the light of Christ to communities that have never heard the Gospel. Our latest praise report: new church land secured in Johar Town, Lahore, fully paid for and dedicated to the Lord in March 2026!
- Thousands of Bibles distributed in Urdu across Pakistan every year – putting the Word of God in the hands of hungry believers
- Gospel crusades and revival meetings drawing hundreds of people at a time, with souls being saved and lives transformed
- Christian schools established through Maranatha Christian High School, educating hundreds of underprivileged children and raising a new generation of faith
- Sewing schools for women empowering widows and vulnerable women with skills and dignity
- Flood relief and disaster response reaching affected Christian families with food, clothing, and hope
- Motorbikes provided to village pastors enabling them to reach remote communities with the Gospel
- Widows and orphans supported with food packages, Christmas gifts, and ongoing care
The body of Christ in Pakistan is standing strong. Every church that is burned down is rebuilt. Every Bible that is destroyed is replaced with ten more. Every life that is lost becomes a seed for a hundred new believers. This is the power of the Gospel that no persecution can stop.
